A Hike Like No Other in Squaw Valley: Shirley Canyon Trail to Shirley Lake

FacebookTwitterEmail

Cascading waterfalls on the Shirley Lake Hike

This is the time folks. The waterfalls are abundant, the trails are clear, and the weather is just right. Squaw Valley is open for business, but so many wait to venture up until after the 4th of July or those that are here seem to forget about the “ski resort” towns and head to the lake. I can’t stress enough that Squaw Valley has so much greatness to offer, including some of the best hiking in North Lake Tahoe.

Featured Hike: Shirley Canyon Trail to Shirley Lake
The waterfalls are stunningly beautiful, and after a good uphill climb, that dip in the refreshing natural pool of water is a great reward. There are some great places to picnic, whether on flat grassy spaces or warm granite rocks. And after the uphill hike and through the grotto-type forest of pines, your are welcomed by the breathtaking views of the surrounding Sierras and steep cliffs.

Dogs are welcome on the trails, and off-leash is okay.

Trail Length:
4 miles roundtrip

Difficulty:
Moderate with steep, rocky inclines in some areas

Directions:From I-80, exit Hwy 89 South (towards Tahoe City), turn right into Squaw Creek Ski Resort, continue 2.2 miles on Squaw Valley Road to the ski resort. The road will curve left into the ski resort parking lot, at the first road on the right (Squaw Peak Way, located by the concrete Aerial Tram building), turn right. And then ask a local or the front desk host at PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn if you need a little more direction.

Enjoy!
